Meet Charlie and Newman

I got a chance to meet Charlie and Newman this week.  They are two wonderful dogs that hang out at the new Zoom Room in Denver.  


The Zoom Room is owned and operated by Kathy Thorpe.  Kathy has had Charlie about six years and  Newman joined their family this past fall.  Both Charlie and Newman are learning to be shop dogs and spend their day at the Zoom Room helping Kathy with her daily routine. Read More...

GSROR Leo's Story

I wanted to let everyone know that Leo crossed the bridge today, he took a turn for the worse and there was nothing we could do except help him go on to greener pastures.  He was only with us for 20 days but he left an impact on my heart and in the life of rescue.  Thank you all for your support and your help

Leo needs your help

Leo is a 5 yr old German Shepherd Dog (GSD) boy that back in November of 2011 collapsed on a ladies front yard in Arkansas. He was skin & bones, weak and very sick. Missy took him to the vet where they found hook worms and tape worm in him which caused the bloating in his abdomen. After a blood test they also found that he tested positive for heart worm. They started treatment for the intestinal worms but would not treat the heart worms until he was stronger. He was transported to German Shepherd Rescue of the Rockies (GSROR) on January 7th and was is really bad shape. He stumbled when he walked and was disoriented and confused. Leo didn’t show any interest in eating for 3 days after arriving, turning away from every kind of food presented to him, even baby food. He was taken to the rescue vet where they told me that even though he was extremely thin and weak they had to start treatment on the heart worm or he was a good candidate for a heart attack before the end of the week. His blood panel came back normal except for the white cell count which was almost triple of normal. He was put on 3 kinds of medications after x-rays and blood work on top of that painful injection.

Leo started to go downhill 2 days after seeing the vet and was taken in for 2 more visits before landing in ER on Sunday 1/15. The ER vet said his lungs were filled with fluid, as well as his abdomen because his heart was not functioning properly – he was in distress. His chances of survival were less than 50% and we should consider putting him down. Leo waited 2 months to come into rescue to get the help he was needing – I just couldn’t put him down. So he spent the night at the hospital and when I picked him up in the morning there was a reduction of the fluids and he was showing signs of improvement. But his journey wasn’t over. I took Leo to a cardiologist and after many more tests we discovered that his heart was now back to normal, but the fluid in his lungs was now the top priority, he was still on the verge of dying if we couldn’t reduce this. Also the heart worms were beginning to die off and that was another concern as to if they were going to cause clotting in his present condition. Leo’s blood levels were now all out of whack and they couldn’t treat anything until they got him stable and his lung infection under control. The bloating in his tummy was already being absorbed by his body but there are still many things causing this baby problems.

Leo has shown us that he wants to live and he is depending on us to help him have that opportunity. Just in the 8 days that he has been in rescue, his vet bills have been almost $2,100 and he will need his medication refiled soon. Just 2 of the medications he requires cost over $300. In three weeks Leo will need to go back for x-rays, blood work, an echo cardiogram, and another heart worm treatment. We are a small rescue and rely solely on donations and adoption fees to cover our vet expenses. We are not financially able at this time to cover this kind of expense and we are reaching out to all of you for donations to help us keep helping Leo. He is a fighter and he needs your help to win this battle.

Show your support for homeless pets during the Dumb Friends League Pledges for Pets Telethon, Jan. 29

DENVER (Dec. 12, 2011) Sit … Stay … Watch … and make a pledge to support homeless pets at the Dumb Friends League on Sunday, Jan. 29. Tune in to the 14th annual Pledges for Pets Telethon, sponsored by Hill's Science Diet, on FOX31/KDVR from noon to 5 p.m.

During the five-hour live broadcast, viewers will hear heartwarming stories as well as meet dozens of adoptable pets, including cats, dogs, rabbits and other small pets.

“Pet lovers will see the many ways the Dumb Friends League helps pets and people in our community,” said Bob Rohde, president and CEO. “They’ll also see how their donation can make a difference for thousands of homeless pets in our care.”

The Dumb Friends League hopes to raise $300,000 during this year’s telethon. The pledges raised will help provide care for thousands of needy cats, dogs and other small animals. The private, nonprofit organization spends approximately $300 for each homeless pet, including shelter, food and medical care.

“We need the community’s support now more than ever,” said Rohde. “Any dollar amount—whether it’s $10, $25 or $100—will have a direct impact on the pets and people we help each day.”

Last year, more than 19,000 animals were adopted to new homes or returned to their owners by the Dumb Friends League. In addition to adopting homeless pets, the region’s largest animal welfare organization offers other services, including lost and found, humane education, behavior training, foster care, animal cruelty investigations and donor-subsidized spay/neuter surgeries for pets in underserved areas.

The Pledges for Pets Telethon will be hosted by FOX31 on-air talent, including Melody Mendez, Mike Headrick, Shaul Turner and Ken Clark. Denise Plante and Murphy Huston of KOSI 101 will also help emcee the telethon.

 Grand Opening of Canine Social Club Hosts Fundraiser for Dumb Friends League

Denver, CO –  January 13, 2012 – It’s the most barked about event of the year – on January 21, the Zoom Room® will celebrate the social aspect of dog ownership throughout Denver with the grand opening of its new training center. Zoom Room Denver, a sporty indoor dog gym that offers agility training and innovative group classes, opens Saturday, January 21 at 1165 South Broadway.

Denver dogs – and their owners – will enjoy an entire day of engaging activities, including a free caricaturist providing pup portraits, free dog agility classes in the morning and a Doggy Disco® party from 4 PM to 7 PM. Waived cat fees extended through February

DENVER (Jan. 2, 2012) The League is extending its waived adoption fee for cats 1 year and older through Feb. 29. The special is taking place at both shelter locations—the Quebec Street shelter in Denver and the Buddy Center in Castle Rock—as well as the adoption center in Northfield-Stapleton and on its mobile adoption unit, the Pet Care-avan.

Last year, we have seen a high number of cats come through our doors. For the past few months, the Dumb Friends League has asked for the public’s help in finding new homes for these cats, and the League’s call has been heard by supporters around the Denver metro area. Unfortunately, we still have an unusually high number of cats in our care that need loving homes because of this continued need.

“The community has responded to our waived adoption fees on cats, but the challenge continues,” said Bob Rohde, president and CEO of the Dumb Friends League.

Every cat adoption includes a spay/neuter surgery, initial vaccinations, a microchip ID implant, a free office visit with a participating veterinarian and a bag of Hill’s Science Diet pet food. The League spends approximately $300 for each homeless cat that comes through its doors, including shelter, foster and medical care, and behavior training in many cases.

“By choosing to adopt, you get a great deal financially while giving a homeless pet another chance at happiness,” said Rohde. “Plus, adopters welcome more love and companionship into their own lives.”

Ferret Dreams will be having a raffle to benefit the Ferret Dreams Medical Fund.  In 2011, we spent $25,631.17 to take care of all the sick and injured ferrets that came our way.  This fund is also used for those who adopt a ferret with a pre-existing medical condition.  It gives the ferret a better chance of adoption.  The new owners can give this special ferret a home and our Medical Fund will take care of the medical costs related to that particular illness or disease.  It’s a Win-Win situation for the ferrets.
