Dumb Friends League extends adoption special for cats and kittens through August

DENVER (August 4, 2011)  It’s the “Cat Days of Summer” at the Dumb Friends League. There are more than 700 cats and kittens in the organization’s care. To help more felines like Stripes find homes this summer, the League will continue to offer adoption specials for cats.

Through Aug. 31, adoption fees are only $10 for cats 5 months and older, and kitten adoption fees are reduced from $120 to $70—a savings of $50. The specials are taking place at both shelter locations—the Quebec Street shelter in Denver and the Buddy Center in Castle Rock.

“We have discounted adoption fees because we would rather see more cats in loving homes than in our shelters,” said Bob Rohde, president and CEO of the Dumb Friends League. “Now more than ever, we need people to adopt.”

Every cat adoption fee includes a spay/neuter surgery, initial vaccinations, a microchip ID implant, a free office visit with a participating veterinarian and a bag of Hill’s Science Diet pet food. The League spends approximately $300 for each homeless cat that comes through their doors, including shelter, food and medical care.

“By choosing to adopt, you get a great deal financially while giving a homeless pet a second chance at happiness,” said Rohde. “Plus, adopters welcome more love and companionship into their own lives.”

People who cannot adopt at this time may still help by becoming foster parents for needy cats or dogs. Foster volunteers provide temporary care for an animal in their homes—for a few weeks or months—until they are ready for adoption or space is available at the shelters. The League provides foster-care volunteers with food and supplies, as well as veterinary care for pets as needed.

Interested adopters can view all pets in need of homes online at ddfl.org as well as visit the Dumb Friends Quebec Street shelter in Denver or the Buddy Center in Castle Rock. For more information on the adoption specials and volunteering as a foster parent, visit ddfl.org or call (303) 751-5772.
