Dumb Friends League to open equine center to help Colorado’s abused and neglected horses

FRANKTOWN, Colo. (March 6, 2012) - Some of Colorado’s formerly suffering, neglected and abused horses are getting a second chance. The Dumb Friends League announced it will open a new equine center—a unique private rehabilitation and adoption facility set to be fully operational in June 2012. 

The Dumb Friends League Harmony Equine Center is not a sanctuary or a rescue facility. The Center will not accept owner-relinquished horses. It is for horses, as well as ponies, donkeys and mules, that have been removed from owners’ care by law enforcement authorities. Located near Franktown, Colo., the Center can house up to 100 horses at a time in well-equipped barns and on 140 acres of pasture.

“Our commitment to animals extends beyond the household pets that share our lives,” said President and CEO Bob Rohde. “This has been true since the League was formed in 1910, but it hasn’t been feasible for us to shoulder this added responsibility until now.”

A knowledgeable, professional staff is on the premises seven days a week, and veterinarians are available on an on-call basis. Some of the horses brought to the Center must be impounded while court cases are pending. These animals are secured and well maintained until the cases are resolved.

“Our primary goal is to alleviate suffering,” said Rohde. “It is our hope and desire that many of these horses will be made whole, rehabilitated and placed with new, responsible owners.”

The Harmony Equine Center will be open to visitors on pre-scheduled adoption days and for special events beginning in June.

As a local, independent, nonprofit organization, the Dumb Friends League relies on donations, not government support or funds from national animal welfare organizations.

“This long-standing dream was made possible by a very generous gift from Leslie and John Malone, longtime, loyal friends of the Dumb Friends League,” Rohde said. “Because the number of unwanted horses continues to rise along with skyrocketing hay prices, the need for an equine center of this caliber has never been greater, and we’ll continue to need help from all of our donors.”

Mobile clinics offer $10 spay/neuter surgeries for cats and kittens

DENVER (Feb. 28, 2012) The Dumb Friends League is offering $10 spay and neuter surgeries for kittens and cats on our mobile clinics. The promotion kicks off on World Spay Day, Feb. 28, and continues through June 30.

World Spay Day is an international campaign that shines a spotlight on spaying and neutering to help save the lives of companion animals. The campaign promotes spay/neuter as a simple, humane and effective way to curb pet overpopulation and reduce the number of homeless pets that are euthanized here in the United States and abroad.

“It is essential that people who have unaltered cats get them spayed or neutered as soon as possible,” said Theresa Geary, vice president of operations with the League. “Cat overpopulation is a problem in many communities, and Denver is no exception.”

Bring a pet to one of the League’s mobile clinics by 7:30 a.m. The pet will be ready for pickup between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. the same day. No appointment is necessary. Each cat is required to arrive in a carrier or secured container. Owners will receive home care instructions.

“Having a cat spayed or neutered before 5 months of age can help it live a happier, healthier and longer life,” said Geary.

The Dumb Friends League mobile clinics provide donor-subsidized spay and neuter surgeries to pets in underserved communities within the Denver metro area. Each surgery is performed by a veterinarian licensed in the state of Colorado.

The special is taking place at both shelter locations—the Quebec Street shelter in Denver and the Buddy Center in Castle Rock—as well as the adoption center in Northfield-Stapleton and on its mobile adoption unit, the Pet Care-avan.

For the past few months, the Dumb Friends League has asked for the public’s help in finding new homes for cats, and the League’s call has been heard by supporters around the Denver metro area.

“The community has responded to our waived adoption fees on cats, but the challenge to find all the cats in our care forever homes continues,” said Bob Rohde, president and CEO of the Dumb Friends League.

Every cat adoption includes a spay/neuter surgery, initial vaccinations, a microchip ID implant, a free office visit with a participating veterinarian and a bag of Hill’s Science Diet® pet food. The League spends approximately $300 for each homeless cat that comes through its doors, including shelter, foster and medical care, and behavior training in many cases.

Show your support for homeless pets during the Dumb Friends League Pledges for Pets Telethon, Jan. 29

DENVER (Dec. 12, 2011) Sit … Stay … Watch … and make a pledge to support homeless pets at the Dumb Friends League on Sunday, Jan. 29. Tune in to the 14th annual Pledges for Pets Telethon, sponsored by Hill's Science Diet, on FOX31/KDVR from noon to 5 p.m.

During the five-hour live broadcast, viewers will hear heartwarming stories as well as meet dozens of adoptable pets, including cats, dogs, rabbits and other small pets.

“Pet lovers will see the many ways the Dumb Friends League helps pets and people in our community,” said Bob Rohde, president and CEO. “They’ll also see how their donation can make a difference for thousands of homeless pets in our care.”

The Dumb Friends League hopes to raise $300,000 during this year’s telethon. The pledges raised will help provide care for thousands of needy cats, dogs and other small animals. The private, nonprofit organization spends approximately $300 for each homeless pet, including shelter, food and medical care.

“We need the community’s support now more than ever,” said Rohde. “Any dollar amount—whether it’s $10, $25 or $100—will have a direct impact on the pets and people we help each day.”

Last year, more than 19,000 animals were adopted to new homes or returned to their owners by the Dumb Friends League. In addition to adopting homeless pets, the region’s largest animal welfare organization offers other services, including lost and found, humane education, behavior training, foster care, animal cruelty investigations and donor-subsidized spay/neuter surgeries for pets in underserved areas.

The Pledges for Pets Telethon will be hosted by FOX31 on-air talent, including Melody Mendez, Mike Headrick, Shaul Turner and Ken Clark. Denise Plante and Murphy Huston of KOSI 101 will also help emcee the telethon.

Send your kid to a fun and educational camp over winter break! The Dumb Friends League will host three one-day camps at each of their shelter locations during winter school breaks.

They will be held Dec. 20, 21 & 22 at the Buddy Center in Castle Rock and Dec. 27, 28 & 29 at the League's Quebec Street shelter in Denver.  The camps help children learn lessons of compassion, respect and responsibility. Critter Craft Camp is for third through fifth graders, Cat Camp is for third through fifth graders, and Careers Camp is for sixth through eighth graders. Tuition is $50 for each camper, with fees benefiting the Dumb Friends League.

DENVER (Nov. 21, 2011) Our four-legged friends need your help this holiday season. The Dumb Friends League is holding its annual Paws to Give fund drive in November and December to help care for more than 24,000 homeless pets this coming year.

“We need your help now more than ever,” said Bob Rohde, Dumb Friends League president and CEO. “Any amount you can give—whether it’s $10, $25, $50 or more—is much appreciated and can make a big difference for the pets and people in our community.”

Financial contributions can be made online at ddfl.org or by mailing a check to Dumb Friends League Paws to Give, 2080 S. Quebec St., Denver, CO 80231.

In addition to making a financial donation, you can also help homeless pets by doing your holiday shopping at the Dumb Friends League:

·         Sit… Stay… Shop. Visit the Sit… Stay… Shop at both shelters for gourmet pet treats, food and supplies such as pet beds, toys, collars and leashes.

Hike with your hound and help homeless
pets at Dumb Friends League Wag `n Trail

Sept. 17 fundraiser supports Dumb Friends League Buddy Center in Castle Rock

CASTLE ROCK, Colo. (August 30, 2011) Follow the trail of wet noses and wagging tails at the Dumb Friends League Wag `n Trail! The 1.6-mile hike for people and their dogs takes place Saturday, Sept. 17, from 8 a.m. to noon at the Glendale Farm Open Space north of Castle Rock. The seventh annual fundraiser benefits the League’s Buddy Center.

There is no registration fee for the Wag `n Trail, but participants are encouraged to collect pledges and earn prizes. You can hike the trail at your own pace anytime between 8 a.m. and noon. If you raise at least $75 in pledges, you will receive a long-sleeved Wag `n Trail T-shirt, ice cream for you and your dog, a bag of dog biscuits and a professional photo along the trail. More pledges earn participants additional prizes.

Following the hike, animal lovers can enjoy flyball demonstrations, food and refreshments, as well as purchase pet-related merchandise from sponsors and vendors. There is a five-acre off-leash park located near the trailhead as well.

The Buddy Center provides shelter and care for more than 5,000 homeless pets each year. In addition to adopting homeless pets, the center also offers other programs and services, including lost and found, behavior training, humane education and animal welfare investigations.

Dumb Friends League waives adoption fee through Sept. 30 for adult cats

DENVER (Sept. 7, 2011) Nearly 760—that’s the number of cats that are in the care of the Dumb Friends League right now, which outnumbers more than 100 incorporated municipalities of Colorado. In effort to increase feline adoptions, the area’s largest animal welfare organization is waiving adoption fees through Sept. 30 for all cats, 1 year or older.

“Since March, we have seen more than 6,000 cats and kittens come through our doors at both of our shelters,” said Bob Rohde, president and CEO of the League. “We are here to serve animals in need and be a voice for them, but now more than ever, we need our pet-loving community to help homeless cats find permanent homes.”

The waived-fee feline adoptions will be offered at both shelters—the Quebec Street shelter in Denver and the Buddy Center in Castle Rock—and the satellite adoption center in Northfield Stapleton.  The adoption package includes spay/neuter surgery, initial vaccinations, microchip ID implant and a free office visit with a participating veterinarian. The League spends approximately $300 on each homeless pet it receives, including shelter, foster and medical care, and adoption services.

“We want to see cats in loving homes, not in a shelter,” said Theresa Geary, vice president of operations. “That is why we’re waiving adoption fees for adult cats all month long.”

Families that cannot adopt at this time may still help by becoming foster parents for needy cats or dogs. Foster volunteers provide temporary care in their homes until an animal is ready for adoption or space is available at the shelters. The League provides foster families with food and supplies, as well as veterinary care as needed.

“We need everyone’s help to prevent more unwanted pets from coming through our doors,” said Geary. “It’s essential people with unaltered pets have them spayed or neutered.”

In addition to spaying and neutering every adoptable pet at both shelters, the League also offers donor-subsidized spay/neuter surgeries for pets in underserved areas of Metro Denver. These surgeries are performed by licensed veterinarians on the League’s two mobile clinics, the Meow Mobile and the LuLu Mobile.
